Identifying Bullying: Spotlight On Social Bullying
Our "Courageous Conversations" series provides relatable content to schools and parents for identifying and dealing with bullying and harassment.
It is always important for a parent or educator to take action when a child is experiencing bullying. While our first response is often emotional and protective it isn't the most productive. A response that acknowledges behavior can be changed and reframes the focus from labeling a child as a “bully” to referring to them as a “child with bullying behavior” recognizes that there is capacity for change.
Children need to understand the impact their behavior has on others and realize the hurt they are causing. With adult guidance, redirecting bullying behavior toward an understanding of differences, as well as the practices of kindness and inclusion, are good strategies for reshaping a child’s behavior.
For the child experiencing bullying it is important they know they have the legal right to be safe at school. If the bullying continues even after authorities have been made aware, it is important to be aware that there are laws designed to address this.
